Fresh produce is reasonably priced, filling, and provides a better range of nutrients than processed foods. It usually requires preparation to become ingestible, and has a short shelf life. So for the last few months, I've been taking a wide range of produce and blending it, then freezing it. Whatever doesn't taste good (asparagus, parsnips), can be balanced out with better tasting produce (pineapple, grapes). Freezing causes minimal nutrient losses (15% of vitamin C is the highest number I could find) and with enough space, you can convert an afternoon's worth of preparation to a month's supply.
This may not be for everyone, but if you're willing to make changes to your intake pattern, you can get better results for the money you put into this. If anyone out there is interested in this approach, try entering the items you use into a nutritional tracker website and compare it to your current diet.
