Can Pinterest Help Your Freelancing Business? | FreelanceFolder

Posted February 3, 2012 in Social Media

If you?re active in social media, you may have recently heard of Pinterest, a new social media site that is gaining popularity. In fact, it seems like everyone is suddenly talking about Pinterest. From all the talk it?s hard to tell whether it?s a trend or a fad.

You may even wonder if there is any way that your freelancing business could possibly benefit from using Pinterest. You may be asking yourself whether you should get involved in Pinterest.

In this post, I?ll take a look at Pinterest from a freelancer?s perspective. I?ll explain what it is and also take a look at some benefits and drawbacks of the site for freelancers.

Of course, ultimately every freelancer needs to make their own decision about Pinterest.

What It Is

Pinterest is known as a pinboard. Offline, a pinboard is a type of bulletin board that you pin photos and other images to.

Online, a pinboard is basically a bookmarking service that lets you save the images of things that you are interested in. While Pinterest is currently the best known pinboard, others include Pinboard and Trello.

One thing that distinguishes pinboards from other social sharing sites is the visual aspect. Members are invited to share and comment on images that interest them. Pinboards (and especially Pinterest) are heavy on the images and light on the text.

If you?ve ever visited Pinterest, you?ll find a variety of topics. Here?s a small sampling of what you might find:

  • Recipes
  • Decorating Ideas
  • Fashion Ideas
  • Organizing tips
  • Inspirational quotes

There?s even a category titled ?Design,? although it?s not necessarily just about graphic or web design.

Benefits of Pinterest

I can see four possible benefits of Pinterest for freelancers:

  1. Great for finding inspiration?Whatever it is you need to be inspired about, there are probably images of it out there. Do you want to do a design based on a sunset? With Pinterest, you can see hundreds of photos of sunsets. What about creating a design based on leaves? Again, with Pinterest you can find lots of different leaf images.
  2. Visual emphasis?Pinterest has a visual emphasis and as such it?s great for visually oriented freelance professions such as design, art, and photography. Of course, you will find some quotes out there and other short bits of text, but for the most part the content on Pinterest is graphics and photos.
  3. Good for branding and building an image?Pinterest can be great for building a brand or an image. Pinterest is still in its early days, so for the most part big name brands aren?t out there yet. However, I can see some visually oriented freelancers creating a gallery of their work and possibly referring clients to it.
  4. Links to Facebook?Right now it?s easy to share to your Facebook account when you pin an item to Pinterest. All you need to do is check a box. Currently, there are no links to other social media sites, but who is to say what the site has planned for the future?

Now that we?ve looked at the benefits of Pinterest for freelancers, it?s time to look at the drawbacks.

Drawbacks of Pinterest

I can also see four possible drawbacks of Pinterest (based on the current version) for freelancers.

  1. Privacy?Right now, as I understand it, there?s no way to restrict who can view your pinboard. That means that right now it?s really not a good tool to work on or share proprietary materials. With such a restriction in place, however, Pinterest could possibly be used for collaboration.
  2. Possible copyright issues?Of course, any time that you share something that is copyrighted online you run the risk of it being stolen. When I discussed Pinterest with some of my Google+ friends, they expressed concern that sharing on Pinterest somehow transferred the rights of what was being shared to the platform. (I?m not a lawyer, so I don?t know if this is true.)
  3. Not widely available?Probably one of the biggest drawbacks for freelancers who want to use Pinterest is that it?s not widely available. You have to ask for an invitation. In fact, to write this post I had to look on with a friend to get an idea of what Pinterest is about since I haven?t received my login yet.
  4. Limited user profiles? The final drawback that I see for freelancers is that user profiles seem to be very small?just a photo and a few lines. So, Pinterest isn?t really about meeting and getting to know people so much as it is about sharing things that you are interested in.

Black Keys Celebrate Humble Roots In 'Gold On The Ceiling' Video

The band's crackling new clip premieres Monday (February 6) at 7:54 p.m. on MTV, with an exclusive interview to follow on MTV.com.
By James Montgomery

Long before the Black Keys scored a series of radio hits, won a grip of Grammys or even sold out Madison Square Garden (in 15 minutes), they were best known around their hometown of Akron, Ohio, as either the worst landscaping team in history, or the best brunch band on the planet. It sort of depended on the day of the week.

"When we first started the band, I was working in a restaurant, cooking, and we were mowing lawns, and occasionally we would play music at a brunch at a restaurant or something," drummer Patrick Carney laughed. "[And when we were] actually mowing lawns, most of them were residential property that was not very nice, so it was basically like mowing dirt fields filled up with 40-ounce bottles."

"You didn't even have to show up," frontman Dan Auerbach added.

And more often than not, they didn't ("We kind of got fired," Carney deadpanned), especially since they were usually logging miles in their van, playing gigs wherever they could find them. This routine basically continued unabated for nearly a decade, until the Keys broke through to the big time with 2010's Brothers album. And with the follow-up success of last year's "Gold on the Ceiling" video on MTV at 7:54 p.m., with a 30-minute interview to follow on MTV.com. The clip very much pays homage to the band's blue-collar roots, mostly by capturing them doing what they do best: playing live. It's a skill they honed by hammering out miles in that van, which is why all this talk about their past is oddly fitting; for a band that's accomplished so much, the Black Keys have truly never forgotten where they came from. Or how hard they worked to get to this point.

"That's how we started. I think people find that interesting about us, because it's not an overnight success. ... It's taken us 10 years to get to where we are, and it was a lot of hard work," Auerbach said. "I don't really know how we did it sometimes, you know? Because it was kind of crazy. We would drive for 12 hours to get paid 50 bucks, then drive back. It was just stupid sometimes."

"The first time we played New York, it was September 2002, and it was a big deal for us," Carney said. "So we drive eight-and-a-half hours from Akron to New York, open for an awful ska band in Brooklyn ... and we got 50 bucks. And drove straight back to Akron. It wasn't even enough money for gas."

But hey, at least it beat the brunch circuit.

Catch the world premiere of the Black Keys' "Gold on the Ceiling" video Monday (February 6) at 7:54 p.m. on MTV with an exclusive 30-minute interview to follow on MTV.com.

Feigning Fern: Motherhood

When I began this blog, I made the decision not to post about my kids. Not because I'm not proud of them or don't enjoy talking about them, but because I'm tired of being thought of as just a mother. I am not just a mother. I'm still the same person I was before I had babies. I'm still me. I've been me a lot longer than I've been a mother. This is not to say that motherhood hasn't changed me, of course it has, but I am still a whole person. I'm still Anita (or Fern... OK, the name is really not the point here, I'm talking more about the essence of my being).

When my second child was a newborn I decided to do something just for me. I saw an ad in the paper inviting people to audition for a play that the local theatre group was staging. Perfect, I thought.?So I tried out, got the part I wanted, and began learning lines and attending rehearsals.

It felt really good doing something for myself. Making it to rehearsals when I had an infant and a two-year-old at home, as well as memorising all my dialogue before anyone else made me feel proud. I felt like a Super-Mum, and I felt like I counted for something. Most importantly, I felt like I was still my own person.

A few weeks into rehearsals my fellow cast-mates finally got around to asking me what I did.
Well, I said, I have a two-year-old and a newborn baby.
Oh OK, replied one cast-member, so you're just?a Mum then? You don't have a job or anything?

What. The. Hell.

I was furious. Seriously! What is that supposed to mean? Just a Mum?! I'd given birth only a few short weeks before! And I was in a play, it wasn't like I was sitting around on my arse day in, day out, doing nothing but feed and change my children.

I feel a bit pissed off just writing about it. I still want to know what else that woman expected me to be doing with my life at that point in time. Idiot.

Since then, I feel like a lot of people have written me off as Just a Mum. No matter what I do to try and prove myself as a person, I know that the first word that comes to their minds when they think of me is Mother. And yes, I love my children and I love being a mother, but I really hate that.

Sometimes I don't tell people I have children. It's interesting, because it makes me feel like I'm being viewed as a whole person. A person in my own right. A happy, intelligent woman who lives a rich and full life. When I finally reveal I have two little kids at home, well, you should see their faces... They can hardly believe it, and I just don't get it. I mean, what's not to believe?

So, for all you people out there, here is the truth: I am a Mother, but I'm a lot of other things too. I'm a writer, a poet, an actress, a musician, a crafter, and a student. I work in radio, and have other exciting job opportunities on the horizon. I like spending quiet time at home with my family, but I also like going out with my friends to drink and dance and be silly. Yes, I am a mother, but that's never going to stop me being me. My children do not complete me; I'm a whole all on my own.

Former Saint Louis, UNLV coach Spoonhour dies (AP)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Charlie Spoonhour, the popular, homespun coach who took Saint Louis to three NCAA tournaments behind a prolific offense, has died after battling a lung disease. He was 72.

Spoonhour, who also coached at Missouri State and UNLV, died Wednesday, said Chuck Harker, the funeral director at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. Spoonhour was diagnosed in 2010 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which required a transplant at Duke University Medical Center in nearby Durham, N.C.

In 19 seasons as a Division I head coach, Spoonhour was 373-202.

He built his reputation at Missouri State, then known as Southwest Missouri State, where he was 197-81 with five NCAA tournament appearances from 1983-92. The school planned a moment of silence during a pre-game tribute to Spoonhour before its game against Wichita State on Wednesday night.

"The entire Missouri State University family is deeply saddened by the passing of Coach Spoonhour," athletic director Kyle Moats said. "His legacy is one of class, distinction and achievement, and he will be dearly missed by the many lives he touched in his many endeavors."

Spoonhour was a popular coach and his NCAA appearances with Saint Louis in the 1990s came with teams who swamped opponents with a barrage of 3-pointers. This was just the latest version of "Spoonball," which was a more patient, possession-oriented offense in Spoonhour's days at Southwest Missouri State.

After compiling a 122-90 record in seven seasons at Saint Louis, he retired briefly then returned to coaching at UNLV, going 54-31 in three seasons. He retired following the 2003-04 season.

Saint Louis ended a 20-year NCAA tournament drought under Spoonhour, who produced consecutive 23-win seasons and back-to-back NCAA berths in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Those teams relied heavily on sharpshooters Erwin Claggett, Scott Highmark and H Waldman, and played to sellout crowds of 21,000 while Spoonhour prowled the sidelines clad in black turtleneck sweater to offset his close-cropped white hair.

Saint Louis' first-round victory over Minnesota in 1995 was the school's first in 43 years. The Billikens lost in the second round to a Wake Forest team led by future NBA star Tim Duncan.

Now headed by Rick Majerus, Saint Louis was ranked for one week earlier this season, its first Top 25 appearance since Spoonhour's glory days in1994.

Chargers coach Clinton hits 300

Coach Joe Clinton of Pearl River goes into his next game with the men?s basketball team at Dominican College flush on the heels of earning the 300th victory in a 20-year career leading the Chargers.

Dominican looks to nail down No. 301 for the veteran mentor on Wednesday night (Feb. 1) when Post University (8-12) of Waterbury, CT, comes to call at the Hennessy?Center in Orangeburg for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division contest.

Game time is set for 8 p.m. The women?s teams are set to tip-off at 6 p.m.

The Chargers hit the milestone after defeating the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 74- 62, in a CACC game that elevated the overall record to 11-7, and 4-6 in conference play.

Dominican jumped to an overpowering 40-13 lead with just under a minute to play in the first half.

The Chargers kept a double-digit lead for most of the second half until the 4:41 mark when a WU lay-up made it 59-50. The Chargers rebuilt the lead to 69-53, and coasted home.

Junior Cory Quimby of Otisville had the game?s only double-double with 20 points and 18 rebounds, while guard Khaleev Ginyard of Brentwood had 13 points.

Forward Daniel Woods of Upper Marlboro, MD, also scored 13 points coming off the bench.

Guard Leon Porter of Laurel, MD, added nine points and a game-leading nine assists in the triumph.

K.C. Jentzen of Nanuet led the Lady Chargers past Wilmington, 60-52, coming off the bench to score 12 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor.

Dominican, which improved to 9-7 all told and an impressive 9-2 in the conference, also took an early lead behind the play of guard Shannon Lavelle of Floral Park, and led 30-18 at the break. Wilmington, which fell to 1-14, 0-10, was outscored 17-6 in the first eight minutes after the break, and never threatened.

Spartans fall short in D.C.

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men?s and women?s basketball teams fell to their powerful counterparts at the University of the District of Columbia in D.C., but the Spartans put up strong efforts on the road in each game, with the men narrowly pulling off a mighty upset.

Coach Dennis O?Donnell?s men?s team held the host Firebirds (16-3 all told, 7-2 East Coast Conference) to a season-low point total in a 63-62 loss, while Coach Kim Lusk?s squad was upended 54-44 to stop a two-game winning streak.

?This was a good win,? UDC coach Jeff Ruland, a former top-notch pro player and star at Iona College, said on the Firebirds? website. ?I thought we played very good defense. Our offense was not exactly stellar, but credit St. Thomas Aquinas because they played real hard.?

The Spartans (7-11, 3-6) were thwarted despite 13 points each from junior guards Justin Brown of Uniondale and Irin Stark of the Bronx.????????

The Firebirds held a 32-24 halftime edge, but were unable to finish off the feisty Spartans. The Firebirds appeared to have matters in hand with a 58-50 cushion with just 1:45 left, but STAC hit four, three-pointers?two by Stark, and one each by Brown and Omar Kellman of Brooklyn?in the waning seconds.

UDC needed two free throws by Dishawn Bradshaw with two seconds left to take the one-point lead, one that held up when Kellman missed a 90-foot desperation attempt at the buzzer.

Junior Nick Lopez of Jackson, NJ, had 11 points for the Spartans while Brown grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.

The Spartans? defensive pressure limited the powerhouse UDC squad to just 40 percent shooting (25-63), but STAC was held to 35 percent.

Brown was a force as STAC dominated the glass, with a 48-36 edge off the boards.

The Spartans, in the midst of playing six of eight games on the road, will visit Queens College in Flushing on Wednesday night (Feb. 1) at 7:30 p.m.?

The Lady Spartans, who also visit Queens College on Wednesday night at 5 o?clock, were led by senior forward Briana Sloper of Williston Park.

Sloper scored 15 points as STAC fell to 9-10, 4-5 while UDC won its sixth straight to match the men?s record at 16-3, and 7-2 in the conference.

The Lady Spartans will return to Aquinas Hall in Sparkill to host Molloy College at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 4), as the front end of a twin bill with the men?s teams.
