Spoon River College faculty file intent to strike notice

CANTON,Ill. -- Salary disputes at Spoon River College are being attributed to delays in state funding.

Last week, the school's Faculty Association approved an intent to strike.

Divided on issues like professional advancement, insurance and salary, the 34 faculty members have been working without a contract since August 2012.

Currently SRC teachers are the lowest paid community college faculty in the state of Illinois. SRC President Curt Oldfield says increasing the teacher's salaries, would mean an increase in tuition for students.

"The only revenue source to off set those expenditures is through the tuition increases. So our board is very aware of the burden that puts on our students and is trying to keep the tuition increases as low as possible," said Oldfield.

Both sides will return to the negotiation table January 22.
