MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) would help women in the northern zone to gain economic improvement, the alliance promised on Wednesday.
Deputy Commander of Regional Command North Brig. Gen. John Bullard held out the assurance at a gathering regarding change in women?s social and economic lives at Camp Marmal in Balkh.
Representatives of civil society organisations, women affairs directors of the nine provinces in the north, female members of provincial councils and some businesswomen attended the event.
Gen. Bullard told reporters they had established in the zone a women?s council that would convey to ISAF their problems and requirements. The NATO-led force would help them improve their living conditions.
The council would request projects to be implemented by women, the general said, adding females would benefit from such schemes.
Through their assistance, they would try to enable the women to work for and support the government, Bullard explained, hoping that the programmes would resolve their problems.
The establishment of the council was good news for the improvement of Afghan women and society, said Sar-i-Pul provincial council secretary Khadija.
The participants exchanged ideas about Balkh women?s economic prosperity, said Businesswomen?s Association Chairperson Fahima Rahimi. She added they need a hall for the carpet-weaving training centre in Mazar-i-Sharif.
