Foursquare is getting a snazzy redesign.?On Thursday, brand-new versions of the location-based social networking service's apps are being released for Android and iPhone (and a new BlackBerry app will follow in a couple of weeks).
What's changing? Well ... a lot. The app's basically been torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. It no longer simply helps you share your location, but now actually guides you to new places.
The app now has three main tabs?? "Friends," "Explore"?and one dedicated to your profile.
The Friends tab will let you see photos, tips, lists?and places your friends have saved. It's basically a news feed where you can easily "like" items or leave comments on activity.
The Explore tab is the best part?? it helps you figure out where to go by analyzing your activity, your friends' activity, and your current location. Here you'll find suggestions about locations you might like based on what you seem to enjoy, whether you are at your regular stomping grounds or in a totally new city. The recommendations you find in the Explore tab are tailored specifically to you and they'll get better and better the more you use Foursquare.
If you are in the mood for something specific, you can also enter search terms into the Explore tab. The results you get will still be tailored to you and personalized based on where you, your friends or people with similar tastes have previously?checked in.
The redesigned profile tab will make it even simpler to browse through your own check in history, look up your favorite places?and so on.?
Oh, and as a bonus: The button you'll tap to check into a location has been moved to a better location. It's now on the top right, closer to your thumb.
Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
