Sega streamlines US, European operations after 2011 figures predict $86 million loss
Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. has announced that it will begin streamlining its American and European operations after posting an 7.1 billion Yen ($86 million dollar) extraordinary loss for the 2011 year. The move is expected to create a "smaller company positioned for sustained profitability" with the company planning a shift to a new "digital content" strategy. It'll cancel work on new, forthcoming titles and just concentrate on key earners like the Sonic, Football Manager and Total War franchises. There's no official word on if it'll involve job losses, but the company is setting aside 4.9 billion yen ($59.7 million) of that loss figure in order to cover the costs of the corporate reorganization. In the meantime, we're off to pour one out for one of our childhood staples.

Ford CEO Mulally made $29.5 million in 2011
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? The pay package for Ford CEO Alan Mulally rose 11 percent last year to $29.5 million, or a little more than $5 for every vehicle sold.
Mulally earned $2 million in salary, up 43 percent from 2010, and stock awards valued at $13.9 million, up 86 percent from the prior year. But his performance bonus dropped 42 percent to $1.8 million because Ford fell short of market share and quality targets in some areas. Mulally also received $612,587 in perks and other compensation for things like the use of a private jet, a personal car and driver and security.
Despite rising commodity costs and charges for a big expansion in Asia, 2011 was the company's third straight profitable year. There were problems. Ford's U.S. quality ratings were tarnished by glitches in its touch-screen dashboard systems and shifting problems in some automatic transmissions. And while the company gained market share in Europe, its share was flat in other regions.
Mulally's compensation was the highest since 2006, the year he was hired from Boeing Co. to turn around Ford. He made $39.1 million that year thanks to a performance bonus and compensation for leaving the Chicago-based airplane maker.
Mulally's pay ? which put him among the highest-paid CEOs in the U.S. last year when he made $26.5 million ? has angered some Ford factory workers. United Auto Workers President Bob King has called his compensation level "morally wrong." Mulally defended his pay in an interview last fall with The Associated Press, saying most of it is tied to the performance of the company's shares.
"The vast majority of my compensation is at risk, because the numbers that you see are only realizable if we profitably grow the corporation. And that's the way it should be," he said.
Ford's stock price fell 36 percent in 2011. It's climbed 54 percent since Mulally joined the company.
Ford Motor Co. reported last year's compensation for Mulally and for company Chairman Bill Ford on Friday in a filing with the federal government.
Bill Ford, who stepped down as CEO when he hired Mulally, saw his compensation drop 55 percent to $11.3 million in 2011. That was partly because his 2010 salary included compensation from prior years that he earned when the company achieved sustained profitability. Bill Ford's performance bonus also dropped 42 percent to $520,000 and his stock awards fell 21 percent to $2.8 million.
Ford spent $1.4 million on perks and other compensation for Bill Ford. Most of that went to private security.
Dearborn-based Ford earned $20.2 billion in 2011, or $4.94 per share. Worldwide sales rose 6.7 percent to nearly 5.7 million cars and trucks, despite sales slowdowns in Europe and China and old products that made it tough for Ford to compete in South America.
In Friday's filing, Ford also announced the company's annual meeting will be held May 10 in Wilmington, Del.
The Associated Press formula for executive compensation calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits, which makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2011 was the present value of what the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. The number is just an estimate and the amount an executive ultimately receives will depend on the performance of the company's stock.
Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a set time to receive shares or exercise options.

Do I Swap Mortgage For Home Equity Loan? | Bankrate.com

I have been contacted by my bank to obtain a home equity loan to pay off my mortgage. The term of the home equity loan would be the same as my current mortgage (five years) but would allow me to take advantage of a lower interest rate without the additional cost of refinancing my mortgage. Is this a good deal, and am I losing any type of protection provided by a mortgage but not by a home equity loan?

Dear Jim,
The consumer protections can be weaker for a home equity loan versus a conventional first mortgage should you default on your loan and are then pursued by your lender. The lender recourse provisions vary by state but are often different for home equity loans versus first mortgages. A key variable is whether the loan is a "purchase money" loan used to actually buy a home and not used for other purposes such as buying a new truck or financing Junior's college expenses. Arizona, for example, is a nonrecourse state in the case of purchase mortgages, but a home equity lender could still sue for repayment.
Swapping out a first mortgage for a home equity loan also brings up tax questions. Will the interest remain fully deductible? Could you be taxed on any housing debt that's forgiven if you lose your home to foreclosure or enter into a short sale on the property? The answers can be less favorable for a home equity loan. But none of this should be a concern in your case unless you're looking to tap your home's equity for purposes other than refinancing your first mortgage, or if you've taken out previous home equity loans or cash-out refinancing on this home.
Assess the probability of either foreclosure or a short sale over the next five years. It would be my guess that either scenario would be unlikely for a reader this close to the finish line in paying off his mortgage. If that's correct, then go ahead and look at replacing your first mortgage with a home equity loan. But first, make sure you read the next paragraph.
You didn't provide the particulars of your mortgage and the home equity offer, but I know Bankrate's national average for a home equity loan is currently 6.36 percent, and it's 5.22 percent for a home equity line of credit, or HELOC.
However, Bankrate also reports a 3.24 percent national average rate on a 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage (meaning the rate is fixed for five years and then adjusts annually). With rates that low, you shouldn't dismiss the idea of biting the bullet and paying closing costs on a new first mortgage. Don't assume the math won't work on the refinancing. Use one of Bankrate's refinancing calculators to compare the different interest rate expenses between the various approaches to refinancing your mortgage, including a home equity loan.

It's a dangerous time of year for a chocoholic?chocolate rabbits and eggs abound. But a weakness for the cocoa bean might not be a bad thing: those who indulge more frequently seem to actually have lower Body Mass Indexes, BMIs.
Researchers surveyed more than 1,000 adults to see how often they ate chocolate each week. Those who indulged more frequently consumed more calories and more saturated fat than others. But the frequent chocolate eaters still had, on average, lower BMIs. The results are in Archives of Internal Medicine. [Beatrice A. Golomb, Sabrina Koperski and Halbert L. And no, the study was not funded by Hershey, Nestle?or even the Cadbury Bunny.?
Dark chocolate has been linked to better heart health. And this study supports previous findings that certain chocolate compounds can have metabolic benefits.
The research can't prove that chocolate was behind all the smaller behinds. And it's possible that some people will add pounds from their chocolate habit. The only sure way to find out will be to conduct a randomized controlled study. Which leaves me with only one question: where do I sign up?

US doctors have carried out what they say is the most extensive face transplant ever performed.
The operation at the University of Maryland gave Richard Norris a new face, including jaw, teeth and tongue.
The 37-year-old has lived as a recluse for 15 years after being severely injured in a gun accident, and wore a mask whenever he went outside.
The surgery was funded by the US Navy, which hopes the techniques will help casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Surgeons who carried out the 36-hour operation say it was part of a series of transplant operations lasting 72 hours, using organs from one donor in five patients including Mr Norris.
He lost his lips and nose in the accident, and only had limited movement of his mouth.
The lead surgeon says Mr Norris will now get his life back.
"Our goal is to restore function as well as have aesthetically pleasing results," said Eduardo Rodriguez.
The team at the University of Maryland say Mr Norris is now brushing his teeth and shaving, and has regained his sense of smell.
The US government estimates that 200 wounded troops might be eligible for face transplants.
The first face transplant was performed in France in 2005, on a woman who was mauled by her dog.
In 2010 surgeons in Spain carried out the world's first full face transplant.

It's not easy to make Eliezer a sympathetic character, yet Bar-Aba's demonstration of fleeting vulnerability awakens inevitable, if equally brief, compassion.
Its energy and eccentricity assert themselves in funky graphics, imaginative camerawork and everyday moments of awkwardness and absurdity.
The film was a nominee for this year's foreign-language Oscar, and Cedar has a real grasp of how to create conflict and generate tension.
Writer/director Joseph Cedar is wise to the comedy of frustration and alert to the tragedy of hubris.
Writer and director Cedar does a great job of ratcheting up the tension by filtering the story through a simmering family rivalry.
Footnote is at its best when it gets into the cutthroat dynamics of academic competition, which are both horrifying and amusing.
To many viewers the picture might seem as forbidding as a dense scholarly tome. But give it a chance, and you might find it as pleasurable as a good novella.
Largely concerned with the prickliness and delicacy around legacy, and the attendant patrilineal complications...But it's as much about the egotism and dysfunction of academia, reflected in the complex personalities of Eliezer and Uriel.
Footnote finally gets back on track as Eliezer puts his philological skills to use, but it's too little, too late.
[A]cademic research has never been shown with such visual verve. . . [E]ach professor's personality and expertise [is put] in sharp relief both comic and poignant.
Eliezer's facial expressions consist of 'constipated' and 'slightly less constipated.'
Joseph Cedar's Footnote is easily one of the most exciting and creatively executed films about Jewish academics poring over the Torah ever made, excluding perhaps Joel and Ethan Coen's A Serious Man (which really does exist in a world of its own, anyway).
This material could, with just a few edits, be a serious and downbeat drama. But it's Cedar's knowing satire of academic politics (aided greatly by the sprightly and circus-like score by Amit Poznansky) that keeps the proceedings pungently bubbly.

But some saw that as a good thing, raising the bar for who could be nominated. Mr. Sachs is also an economist with extensive experience in economic development as well as a health expert who, like Kim, has worked to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Sachs advocated reform for the World Bank.
?Once Sachs [came forward], it was clear it would be very difficult for the Obama administration to follow past practice and simply choose, again, a political insider or a banker,? says Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the left-leaning Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.
Despite not getting the nomination, Sachs expressed his support for Kim via Twitter.

Study Might Explain Brain Overgrowth Seen in Autism - Health News ...

FRIDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) ? Researchers report that they have identified abnormalities in the DNA and RNA of cells in the prefrontal cortex of the brains of autistic children.
The findings may help to explain the underlying mechanism for the brain ?overgrowth? that prior reports have documented in autistic children. Those studies have found that the brains of young children with autism are larger than the brains of non-autistic children, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is key to complex thoughts and behaviors, including language, social behavior and decision-making.
This growth abnormality likely contributes significantly to the social,
communication, and emotional deficits common among people with autism, the researchers said.
In the new study, researchers analyzed tissue from the prefrontal cortexes of 33 postmortem brain samples from autistic and non-autistic people aged 2 to 56.
In addition to DNA differences known as copy number variations, researchers also did genome-wide RNA profiling and found differences in RNA between the autistic and non-autistic brains. RNA (ribonucleic acid) plays crucial roles within cells, serving as an intermediary between DNA, the blueprints for genetic information, and the production of proteins that carry out a vast array of vital activities in cells.
The RNA abnormalities appear to be involved with genes that code for proteins regulating cellular growth, the researchers said.
?What we found was the networks that are supposed to regulate the genesis of brain cells and develop them were abnormal. The networks that were supposed to regulate DNA repair were turned down. And the networks supposed to regulate neuron removal and survival were abnormal,? said study author Eric Courchesne, director of the Autism Center of Excellence at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.
The study is published in the March 22 issue of PLoS Genetics.
How might these differences fit into the autistic picture?
Preliminary research by the UCSD team found that an excessive amount of neurons, or brain cells, might account for the overgrowth. While typically developing kids had about 0.88 billion neurons in the prefrontal cortex, autistic children had about 1.57 billion.
According to the researchers, the copy number variations along with the RNA abnormalities may disrupt the cell cycle and may explain the underlying mechanism driving the overgrowth.
?We found DNA defects, or copy number variations, in a variety of genes that regulate cell production and cell survival,? Courchesne said. ?To us, that suggests the explanation for why there are an abnormal number of neurons in the prefrontal cortex. Those genes fall into networks that control the number of neurons generated and the number that survive in prenatal life.?
Researchers also noted that the RNA differences vary, depending on the age of the brain, with children and adults having different RNA profiles.
Courchesne said that the way the brain responds to that overgrowth of neurons ? in other words, what?s happening in those repair pathways ? may help to explain why people with autism may have different trajectories, with some seeming to regress and others continuing to learn new skills throughout their lifetime.
?In adulthood, we see individuals that continue to improve, and continue to gain more and more skills and abilities,? Courchesne said. ?Then there are others that don?t show that continued, ongoing improvement or show the opposite. My best guess is the trajectory has less to do with the original cause of the autism, than with an individual?s specific composition of genes, or the available genes to remodel the brain.?
Robert Ring, vice president for translational research at Autism Speaks, said researchers offer up a provocative and plausible theory. However, he noted that while brain overgrowth is well-established, only one, small study has shown that the explanation for it is too many neurons.
?What?s valuable about the approach this group has taken is that they?ve gone directly to the tissue of interest, and have asked, ?Is there any evidence there are abnormalities in the expression of genes that correlate with the neuro-anatomic or cellular findings that have been reported??? EO: The thing is that I represent East Ukraine.:) I have been mesmerized by the culture of East since school. Asia has been always beckoning me with its preserving from ancient times patterns of life and thought. I was to India recently, which brought me even closer to magnetic Asia, I felt the bliss of Harmony. I believe that East safeguards Truth and Love nowadays. I am now much into the philosophy of India, balancing the spiritual and the material in me.
IFX: Are you a leader for life?
EO: I do not make any special efforts to be the first; I just live listening to my heart. Some might say I am a leading person, while others would call me a led person.
IFX:Imagine that you have an opportunity to gain a super ability, what would you prefer and why?
EO: What I would like to have is the ability to teach people real love. There would be no unhappy people then.
IFX: Which gifts do you enjoy most? Tell us about the most memorable and pleasant present you have been ever given?
EO: Sincere smiles of my friends and relatives and heartfelt words are what I appreciate most. Is there anything better than a gathering of all the beloved people on a holiday who are happy together?:)
IFX: Do you like being photographed? Do you feel confident in front of the camera?
EO: Yes, I enjoy being photographed; it feels good to me. I get absolutely dissolved in the process; each flash is like a heartbeat. This is when magic happens.:)
IFX: Are you exactly like in the photos in your everyday life?
EO: What I am in the photos is exactly what I am in life.:)
IFX: Do you think beauty is a gift or rather a result of hard work?
EO: It is a Gift a person gets for self-improvement.
IFX: Is there something to avoid so that to save beauty?
EO: Sorrow is inadmissible. Happiness makes a woman beautiful!
IFX: Do you have an idol you admire?
EO: No, I do not have any idol in the ordinary sense of the word.))) However, there is a person I admire ? Angelina Jolie. First, she has a heart of gold. It is clear from her behavior and actions. Angelina travelled to various countries of the world on a 4-year humanitarian mission. Moreover, in 2006 Angelina Jolie together with Bred Pitt established a charity ??Jolie/Pitt Foundation donating the funds to?Doctors?Without Borders. Second, this fascinating woman is the ideal of beauty for me.
IFX: In your profile you wrote that you are into psychological science and that you practise NLP. Do you apply these methods to your friends and relatives? Are they of any help in life?
EO: Yes, I do use the methods, with good intentions only. Thanks to the knowledge of NLP, I broke free from obsessive affection. I can easily communicate with persons of any psychological type.
IFX: Do you manage to read others like a book?
EO: Definitely not. I do not even strive to do that.:) If I could see through anyone, life would be not so interesting.
IFX: Are you a novice on Forex? What have you accomplished so far?
EO: Yes, I am new to Forex, so I cannot say that I am competitive, judging by the rating. However, I really like finance and enjoy studying economics at the Academy, so I am familiar with securities transactions. I hope I will get more skillful on the market soon and my rating will increase.
IFX: Had you cooperated with InstaForex Company before the Miss Insta Asia contest?
EO: No, the beauty contest was the starting point of my work with InstaForex Company.

There is so much to talk about when it comes to awareness for any campaign: ?how to help, what to look for, when things start happening, and who it happens to.
I?ve blogged a bit about what the signs of domestic violence are and what you can do to help someone who is a victim of domestic violence.
I plan to continue posts like these because I believe it?s important to educate people. ?I couldn?t help but think, though, that personal experiences really drive home the importance of this awareness.
While I?ve briefly touched on my experience with domestic violence, and I?d like to give others the opportunity to share their experiences as well.
I?d like to feature survivors, those still in abusive relationships, children of these relationships, any story at all. ?Please feel free to contact me if you?d like to contribute. ?You can do so anonymously if you?d like.
