Decision to give a group effort in the brain

Dec. 23, 2012 ? A monkey would probably never agree that it is better to give than to receive, but they do apparently get some reward from giving to another monkey.

During a task in which rhesus macaques had control over whether they or another monkey would receive a squirt of fruit juice, three distinct areas of the brain were found to be involved in weighing benefits to oneself against benefits to the other, according to new research by Duke University researchers.

The team used sensitive electrodes to detect the activity of individual neurons as the animals weighed different scenarios, such as whether to reward themselves, the other monkey or nobody at all. Three areas of the brain were seen to weigh the problem differently depending on the social context of the reward. The research appears Dec. 24 in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Using a computer screen to allocate juice rewards, the monkeys preferred to reward themselves first and foremost. But they also chose to reward the other monkey when it was either that or nothing for either of them. They also were more likely to give the reward to a monkey they knew over one they didn't, preferred to give to lower status than higher status monkeys, and had almost no interest in giving the juice to an inanimate object.

Calculating the social aspects of the reward system seems to be a combination of action by two centers involved in calculating all sorts of rewards and a third center that adds the social dimension, according to lead researcher Michael Platt, director of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience.

The orbital frontal cortex, right above the eyes, was activated when calculating rewards to the self. The anterior cingulate sulcus in the middle of the top of the brain seemed to calculate giving up a reward. But both centers appear "divorced from social context," Platt said. A third area, the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACCg), seemed to "care a lot about what happened to the other monkey," Platt said.

Based on results of various combinations of the reward-giving scenario the monkeys were put through, it would appear that neurons in the ACCg encode both the giving and receiving of rewards, and do so in a remarkably similar way.

The use of single-neuron electrodes to measure the activity of brain areas gives a much more precise picture than brain imaging, Platt said. Even the best imaging available now is "a six-second snapshot of tens of thousands of neurons," which are typically operating in milliseconds.

What the team has seen happening is consistent with other studies of damaged ACCg regions in which animals lost their typical hesitation about retrieving food when facing social choices. This same region of the brain is active in people when they empathize with someone else.

"Many neurons in the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACCg) respond both when monkeys choose a drink for themselves and when they choose to give a drink to another monkey," Platt said. "One might view these as sort of mirror neurons for the reward system." The region is active as an animal merely watches another animal receiving a reward without having one themselves.

The research is another piece of the puzzle as neuroscientists search for the roots of charity and social behavior in our species and others. There have been two schools of thought about how the social reward system is set up, Platt said. One holds that there is generic circuitry for rewards that has been adapted to our social behavior because it helped humans and other social animals like monkeys thrive. Another school holds that social behavior is so important to humans and other highly social animals like monkeys that there may be some special circuits for it, Platt said.

This finding, in macaques that have only a very distant common ancestor with us and are "not a particularly prosocial animal," suggests that "this specialized social circuitry evolved a long time ago presumably to support cooperative behavior," Platt said.

Google working on 'X-phone,' says report

Google is working?with recently acquired Motorola on a handset codenamed "X-phone", aimed at grabbing market share from Apple and Samsung, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Google acquired Motorola in May for $12.5 billion to bolster its patent portfolio as its Android mobile operating system competes with rivals such as Apple and Samsung.

The Journal quoted the people saying that Motorola is working on two fronts: devices that will be sold by carrier partner Verizon Wireless, and on the X phone.

Motorola plans to enhance the X Phone with its recent acquisition of Viewdle, an imaging and gesture-recognition software developer. The new handset is due out sometime next year, the business daily said, citing a person familiar with the plans.

Motorola is also expected to work on an "X" tablet after the phone. Google Chief Executive Larry Page is said to have promised a significant marketing budget for the unit, the newspaper said quoting the persons.

Google was not immediately reachable for comments outside regular U.S. business hours.

Me, My Food, & My Creativity: Christmas Planing - Rant, Menu, and ...

This year we're hosting Christmas dinner at our house. ?In the past that meant twenty five people and a lot of work. ?This year, I'm happy to say we're only expecting fifteen people, yippie! ?I take this task on hesitantly, having a smaller guest list doesn't equate to less cleaning, prepping, or stress, it just means less money spent on food and beverages. ?It also means more quality time with the guests, which is great!

Regardless of the occasion, I always seem to stress myself out when entertaining more than ten people. ?It's one thing to plan a small event for someone else, that's easy I don't stress out over third party budgeted affairs such as; business luncheons, fundraisers, or special events. ?The guest list is a piece of cake with those types of functions, it's just a number when it comes to my career or volunteering. ?The pressure lies within, when I'm entertaining my toughest critics and the sky is the limit financially and creatively. ? I think the stress also comes hand and hand with executing all of my creations in one day and in a timely manner.

Lately all this stress quickly leads to a reminder about the meaning of Christmas. ?The most important part of the holidays is spending time with family and friends and remembering how blessed we all are to be on this earth. ?Shortly thereafter the reality of it all sets in... Christmas is so time consuming and expensive and is basically a glorified Thanksgiving with; wrapping paper, bows, gifts, holiday lights, Christmas trees, and celebrations throughout the month, apposed to one single day of eating.

That about does it, my ranting session has ended! ?Now on to the important stuff, food and beverages!

I've been "pinning" up a storm lately which is a newly welcomed holiday craze for me. ?I have a love hate relationship with Pinterest but, what isn't there to like about having millions of people compile oodles and oodles of fantastic holiday recipes and crafty ideas? ?Take a look at what's on the menu for Christmas...

Specialty Cocktail

What are the holiday's without a tasty cocktail to take the edge off? ?My first priority in Christmas dinner planing was finding a light, yet fun beverage to serve. ?I decided on creative drinks, made with champagne/sparkling wine as a base ingredient! ?I am a bubbly lover, as many of you know and I will say that my go to choice for events such as this is the Asti, it's available at Trader Joe's, follow this link for a brief review and small photo of the label:?http://www.cellartracker.com/note.asp?iWine=29723&iNote=1841145. ?The Asti, aka "sparkling wine" is very affordable ($6.99/bottle) and it tastes great alone or accompanied by pretty much anything. ?I plan to have a variety of juice available for those not choosing to drink and it will double as a great mixer!

The Main Course


In the past, Christmas day meals have been much like Thanksgiving meals, a smorgasbord of tasty food. ?This year I've decided to keep it simple; fun beverages, ?one main course and a semi homemade dessert. ?I have, however, decided to do a main course that is pretty involving, as many home cooks would take one look at the ingredient list and continue the hunt for something else to make. ?The main course will be Juila Childs' Beef Bourguignon, http://cooking.knopfdoubleday.com/2009/07/13/julia-childs-boeuf-bourguignon-recipe/. ? I have made this three or four times in the past, but never for fifteen people and I will be tripling the recipe. ?The main reason I chose this dish was because it's amazingly good and everything can be made the day before and the flavor and quality won't be compromised! ?If anything letting it sit over night increases the flavor of the entree.

The Main Course Meat
Thursday I decided to go buy the meat and unfortunately the first little hiccup in my well thought out plan occurred. ?The meat was on sale for one day only at a hispanic grocery store, meaning my espanol will be put to the test. ?I arrive at the meat department, there isn't any cuts of meat in the designated spot next to the sign. ?I ask the guy behind the counter if there is any left and he doesn't understand my question, I point. ?Oooohhh! Si! The meat department associate holds up a great cut of beef. ?I then say in spanish, I'll take 12 pounds, will you cut the meat into 2" cubes for me please? ?No comprendo... Ugh. ? He then goes and finds another associate, comes back with him and they both look at me with a blank look (I'm waiting for him to speak in english or spanish so I can figure out how to say what I want)...silence. ?I say can you please cut the meat into two inch pieces, OH! Yea, ok the new guy then translates to the original guy. ?Then they come back with a sample cut, 4" x 3", I say in half please. ?I come back when it's all cut to my dismay the meat has bones! ?They didn't cut the meat part into 2" cubes really because some of the cuts were actually all bone! ?I haven't come up with a backup plan yet, I'm going to see if I can salvage the meat tomorrow.

The Wine
The most important part of the entree is using a good red wine, for this I decided to stick within a budget of $20, I did however need four bottles of wine. ?I made a trip to Big Lots where I was happy to find three, 1.5 litter bottles of Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir! ?I only needed to purchase two bottles and I came in under budget at $19! ?This wine normally sells for $11-$25 a bottle depending on the year and I was able to get the equivalent of four bottles for less than $20, SCORE! I guess you win some and you lose some, win on the wine, lose on the meat.

Dessert

We're going to have cannoli's for dessert! ?This is my first time making them and I pondered over ordering cannoli molds and making the shells from scratch or purchasing pre-made shells at an italian deli (both Caesars and Luigis carry them). ?I looked into making them first and after five minutes of research the decision was crystal clear, I would purchase them! ?Check out this video of how to make homemade cannoli shells;?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DuHPdo_qA4. ?Now with Christmas being only a few days away both the delis didn't have enough shells in stock. ?Luckily Luigis said they would be getting a shipment of them in the next day. ?Perfect.

  • 1. You Brush Your Teeth After A Glass Of Wine

    Do you rush to the bathroom at parties to scrub away red wine stains? You could actually be raising your risk for permanent staining, says dentist Gigi Meinecke, a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry. Wine's acidity (red or white) can dissolve tooth enamel, and brushing right away can contribute to erosion. Instead, she says, neutralize the acid by rinsing with a glass of water -- and avoid staining in the first place by sipping and immediately swallowing your wine, rather than swishing it in your mouth.

  • 2. You Eat Creamed Spinach

    Creamed spinach, green bean casserole, and candied yams are veggies so they must be good for you, right? Not exactly: While antioxidant-rich produce makes up the main components of these dishes, they are overwhelmed with high-fat and/or high-sugar add-ons. Creamed spinach can contain up to 75% of your saturated fat for the day; green bean casserole -- made with butter, cheese, salt, and fried onions -- can have up to 800 calories a batch; and candied yams have up to 38 grams of sugar per serving! (Stay away from fruitcake, while you're at it: One slice can have more than 400 calories!)

  • 3. You 'Eyeball' The Meat To Tell When It?s Done

    Some people think that it's possible to judge whether meat is cooked through by checking its color or the juices dripping out of it. "Old cookbooks say to ?cook until there's no pink meat remaining, or until the juices run clear,'" says Ben Chapman, PhD food safety specialist at North Carolina State University. "But there's been quite a bit of research done on both poultry and meat that shows that these are not good indicators of whether they have reached a temperature that's considered safe." Instead, to reduce your risk of foodborne illnesses that can linger on uncooked food, you should use a meat thermometer and make sure you're cooking poultry to 165, and red meat to 160.

  • You Wash Bagged Lettuce ... Again

    You need a salad first course for your holiday feast, so you pick up a ready-to-serve bag of greens at the market. The package says they're twice washed -- but it can't hurt to give them one more wash, right? Actually it can, says Chapman. "A national microbiological safety panel looked at those bags and they concluded that even if you wash them again, you're unlikely to remove any type of pathogens that are still hanging on." By touching the lettuce with your hands and tossing it in a colander, however, you do run the risk of introducing new pathogens, he adds, especially if you've recently been handling raw meat, as well. "The best thing you can do is open the bag and dump it right in a salad bowl, ready to eat."

  • 6. You Plan Your Post Holiday Cleanse

    Advertisements for New Year's cleanses and detox diets will promise to rid you of your holiday weight gain. The problem is, severe calorie restrictions and juice-only plans can keep you from getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs, and, because they cause the body to burn large amounts of fat, they even have the potential to create new toxins. If you're looking forward to a fresh and clean start in the new year, consider a diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains instead.

  • 5. You Don't Eat Before A Party

    If you know there's going to food and drinks at the office party tonight, you may think it's best to skip your healthy afternoon snack beforehand. Another bad idea, says J.J. Virgin, certified nutrition specialist and author of <em>Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy</em>. "It makes sense to arrive at a party a little hungry, but to come starving means a glass of wine and appetizers will lead to one big caloric nightmare," she says. "Besides, parties never start when they're supposed to, and you know there's going to be some gooey, crunchy appetizer that will be your undoing." Solution: Taper your appetite by popping a handful of raw almonds before you leave your desk.

  • 7. You Skip Red Meat, But Scarf Down Chicken And Fish

    "Red meat has the most saturated fat, but skinless chicken breasts are not far behind -- and actually have more cholesterol than red meat," says Dana Simpler, M.D., internal medicine doctor at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. Watch out for salmon, as well, which is full of healthy fats, but fats nonetheless. Even though they're healthy choices, they don't give you a pass to pig out. With all sources of animal protein, keep serving sizes in mind.

  • 8. You Stick With Your Regular Workout

    This may seem like a great way to combat excess holiday pounds, says Jessica Smith, coauthor of <em>The Thin in 10 Weight-Loss Plan</em>. "But it could backfire if you find yourself running ragged trying to get everything done and then getting to the gym on top of it all," she adds. "If your to-do list is already overflowing, don't add stress by forcing in a long workout that may interrupt more important health habits like getting enough sleep." Instead, Smith advises, consider breaking up your usual 45-60 minute workout into split sessions -- try a 15-minute strength routine in the morning before you hit the shower, a 15-minute walk at lunch and a 15-minute yoga flow to help relax you at the end of the day. You may find you are less stressed and still burning as many (if not more) calories than with your usual routine.

  • 9. You Join A Gym In January

    The new year is a time for personal reflection and setting goals for self-improvement. It also happens to be when gyms are most crowded, and the staff is busiest signing up new members. If you've been thinking about joining a fitness club, why not use a few of your days off in December to shop around? "It is always wise to visit a gym to make sure it will work for you," says Randy Crawford, an exercise physiology technician at The Ohio State University Center for Wellness and Prevention, and you may get a better feel for the facilities during quieter hours, when you're not rushed to make a decision. "Make sure the hours work with your schedule and the facility has the amenities -- like child care, a family discount, a pool, or personal trainers -- that you desire," he says.

  • You Give Yourself A Cheat Day ... Or Days

    Maybe it starts with doughnuts at your breakfast meeting, or a cookie swap among coworkers. Then comes the holiday luncheon. By the time dinner rolls around, you figure you've already done enough damage -- might as well finish the day off with the richest item on the menu, plus dessert. "It's not just the calories that are the problem here," says Virgin. "You're also psychologically allowing yourself future food deviations and setting yourself up for failure." Letting yourself splurge at truly special events -- like enjoying your sister's stuffing and your mom's pies at Christmas dinner -- is one thing, but don't allow yourself to make excuses for each and every mini holiday celebration. "Have a plan and don't deviate," says Virgin. "If you absolutely must have a dessert, follow my three polite-bite rule: three bites and step away from the cookies."

  • 11. You Go Crazy With The Olive Oil

    Olive oil is full of healthy fats, and has no cholesterol and saturated fat the way butter does, so it can certainly be a healthier alternative in many holiday recipes. But before you dip another piece of bread or help yourself to another serving of olive oil-tossed potatoes, remember that it has just as many calories (120 per tablespoon) as any other kind of fat, says Dr. Simpler. Two tablespoons a day may lower your risk for heart disease, but more than that could contribute to weight gain.

  • 12. You Cook (And Eat) Lots Of ?Light? Recipes

    If you can stick with a single serving, using lower fat or sugar can be a good way to keep your calories and fat count low when enjoying holiday treats, says Smith. "The trouble is, many people think to themselves, 'It's healthier or lower calorie, so I can have two or three ... or five of these.' They often end up eating as many calories as they would have if they had stuck with a smaller serving of the real deal." Knowing that piece of pie is rich and full of calories may make you more likely to enjoy every bite of a smaller serving, Smith suggest, instead of going with a much larger portion of the 'lighter' version.

  • 13. You Buy An "All Natural" Ham Or Turkey

    There may be nothing wrong with meat labeled "all natural" -- but unlike "organic" or "antibiotic-free," all natural simply means that your turkey, for example, doesn't contain artificial ingredients or colors, and has been "minimally processed." This term is open for interpretation; for example, poultry can be injected with sodium and water, and still be labeled "natural." (Check the fine print.)

  • 14. You Swear You'll Have "Just One."

    You know the scenario: Your favorite coworker brings in fresh-baked gingerbread cookies and, to be polite, you have one. An hour later, as your blood sugar crashes, you visit the copy machine ? and have another cookie. And the pattern continues, all. day. long. "The commercial had it right," says Virgin: "You can't eat just one. But if you do breakfast and lunch right, you won't get those mid-morning or mid-afternoon cravings. If you need something to munch on mid-day, keep little baggies of raw almonds or apple slices with almond butter at your desk."

  • 15. You Obsess Over (Or Avoid) The Scale All Month

    So much food over the holidays may cause you to step on the scale several times a day -- or to slide it under the bed and swear off until the New Year. Both policies can be detrimental to your weight and to your emotional wellbeing, studies show: If daily weigh-ins give you anxiety, consider cutting back to once a week. And to make sure your results are consistent, try to weigh yourself on the same scale and at the same time of day.

  • 16. You Overbook And Stay Up Late

    Parties, shopping, baking, and travel add on to our already packed schedules during the holidays, so it?s easy for active, healthy go-getters to fill up their calendars -- and then some. Staying up late and waking up early may help you get everything done, but missing out on sleep can lower your immunity and affect your mood and energy levels. Plus, exposure to bright light at night can raise your risk of depression.

  • 17. You Skip Breakfast Or Lunch

    Banking your calories by skipping (or skimping) on meals so that you can eat more at a holiday dinner won't do your waistline any good; in fact, it's a great way to trigger overeating, says Smith. Focus on eating filling, higher fiber foods at regular mealtimes -- a fruit smoothie with spinach and protein powder for breakfast, for example, and a veggie-filled salad with lean protein for lunch -- so you'll still be able to enjoy holiday meal (and treats!) later without going overboard.

  • 18. You Use Antibacterial Soap

    It's a good idea to shore up your cold and flu defenses during the winter, especially when you're in close social contact with so many friends, coworkers, and relatives who may be sick. But rushing off to wash your hands with antibacterial soap after every handshake may not protect you the way you think: Unless you're at a hospital or doctor's office, there's no need for such extreme protection -- and studies show that the ingredient triclosan, in many antibacterial products, can contribute to drug-resistant bacteria.     Everyone loves an arrangement of holly berries and pine cones, or a bunch of mistletoe -- everyone except for the small children and pets who can choke on or be poisoned by the all-natural ornaments. Display these plants with care, and make sure they (and anything that can fall off of them) are out of reach of anyone or anything that might try to eat them. Watch out for real Christmas trees, too, which can be a dangerous fire hazard if they're not treated with care.

    Recipe makes 24 gingerbread biscuits for dogs | Pets | The Sun ...

    Here is a simple recipe for gingerbread biscuits that should make you a hit with your dogs during the holidays. The process, start to finish, is about 30 minutes.

    GINGERBREAD BISCUITS FOR DOGS

    Every pet is different, so please check with your vet to see if this recipe is suitable for your dog.

    3 cups whole-wheat flour

    1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

    1/2 cup molasses

    1/2 cup water

    Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray or oil.

    In a large bowl, sift together the flour, ginger and cinnamon. Mix in the oil, molasses and water, then let rest for 15 minutes.

    On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough until1/4 inch thick. Using holiday-themed or bone-shaped cookie cutters, cut out cookies, rerolling the dough scraps and cutting out more as able. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet, then bake until firm, about 20 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet, then store in an airtight container.

    Makes 24 biscuits.
