LONDON (AP) ? Documents released by Barclays bank say that its departed chief operating officer, Jerry del Missier, was responsible for ordering others to report lower than actual borrowing rates.

Del Missier resigned Tuesday, hours after Bob Diamond quit as chief executive.

The bank released a memo by Diamond recounting a conversation with a Bank of England official. Barclays said Diamond discussed the call with del Missier, who wrongly concluded that the Bank of England had instructed Barclays to keep its submissions lower.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Miami rapper Pitbull might soon be chilling out in Alaska.

In a marketing deal, Walmart will send Pitbull, aka Armando Christian Perez, to the store that gets the most "likes" on its Facebook page.

Right now, the leading candidate is Kodiak, Alaska. And there might be a reason.

A writer for The Boston Phoenix newspaper thought it'd be funny to send Pitbull to the most remote Walmart possible, and is encouraging people to "like" the Walmart in Kodiak.

It seems to be working.

The Kodiak Walmart had more than 35,000 "likes" Monday, more than five times the town's population.

Kodiak has a significant lead in the contest to land Pitbull, but actual numbers weren't immediately available, Walmart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer said.

She says other Walmart shoppers have until July 16 to like their local stores and pull ahead of Kodiak.

"I know Pitbull is hoping his Miami Walmart shoppers start liking their Facebook page," she said.

That would require some heavy lifting, with one Miami location sitting tight with 45 "likes" Monday.

"He's definitely coming to Kodiak if Kodiak wins," she said.

It would be the rapper's first visit to Alaska.

Pitbull, who is touring Europe, seems to be taking the contest in good nature. "Wherever the fans want to have a party, I will be there," he said in an emailed statement sent Monday from Austria.

Kodiak Island is about 225 miles southwest of Anchorage. It's home to the nation's largest Coast Guard base, and the island is known for its Kodiak brown bear population.

That fact wasn't lost on Pitbull, who tweeted Saturday: "I hear there's bear repellant at Kodiak, Alaska (at)walmartspecials."

Researchers discover potential explanation for why a diet high in DHA improves memory

We've all heard that eating fish is good for our brains and memory. But what is it about DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, that makes our memory sharper?

Medical researchers at the University of Alberta discovered a possible explanation and just published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism.

Principal investigator Yves Sauve and his team discovered lab models fed a high-DHA diet had 30 per cent higher levels of DHA in the memory section of the brain, known as the hippocampus, when compared to animal models on a regular, healthy diet.

"We wanted to find out how fish intake improves memory," says Sauve, a researcher in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry who works in the department of physiology, the department of ophthalmology and the Centre for Neuroscience.

"What we discovered is that memory cells in the hippocampus could communicate better with each other and better relay messages when DHA levels in that region of the brain were higher. This could explain why memory improves on a high-DHA diet."

Sauve noted it is a key finding that when a diet is supplemented with DHA, that additional stores of the omega-3 fatty acid are deposited in the brain. His team confirmed this finding, a discovery other labs have noted as well.

Supplementing your diet with DHA, such as increasing fish intake or taking supplements, could prevent declining DHA levels in the brain as we age, says Sauve.

This research was funded by Alberta Innovates ? Health Solutions.

Earlier this year, Sauve and other colleagues discovered DHA prevents the accumulation of a toxic molecule at the back of the eye that causes age-related vision loss. He is continuing his research in this area.

Arctic drilling creeps forward now, and in 5 years

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? A spokesman for Shell Oil says the company expects to receive final federal authorization to begin drilling exploratory wells off Alaska's northern coasts by late July.

Curtis Smith says successful testing of a "capping stack" off Bellingham, Wash., on Monday was one of the final hurdles.

Capping stacks are designed to kill an undersea oil well blowout by providing a seal on a malfunctioning blowout preventer. One will be carried on a Shell support vessel accompanying drill ships.

Environmental groups contend the government erred by approving Shell's Arctic spill response plans.

Attorney Holly Harris of Earthjustice says that Shell has overstated its ability to respond to a worst-case scenario spill in open water. And she says no oil company has demonstrated it can clean up a spill in ice.

Elton John urges Ukraine to stop attacks on gays

KIEV -- Elton John used an AIDS charity concert in Kiev on Saturday to make an emotional appeal to Ukraine to stop what he called persecution of gays.

The 65-year-old singer broke off during a two-hour performance, part of the Euro 2012 soccer tournament co-hosted by Ukraine, to speak about reports of physical attacks on members of the former Soviet republic's gay community.

John, a regular visitor to the country, drew cheers from thousands of Ukrainians watching his performance on huge street screens when he described Ukraine as "my second home".

"Recently I read about violence against gay people in Ukraine. Beating up gay people is wrong. This for me does not symbolize Ukraine," he said.

"I plead with you: Stop the violence against gay people."

Ahead of the European soccer championship which began on June 8 and ends on Sunday with the final in Kiev, a gay pride march in the Ukrainian capital was called off and one of its leaders was beaten by assailants.

Last Saturday, another leading Ukrainian gay rights activist said he had received hospital treatment after being beaten in Kiev by a group of assailants, who screamed homophobic insults at him.

John, who entered a civil partnership with David Furnish in 2005, regularly champions respect for gay and lesbian rights.
