The recipient of the historic skull plate is being kept anonymous, but was one of the hundreds of people each month in the U.S. alone who suffer serious damage to their skull ? serious, that is, but not irreparable.

For smaller plates, a piece of premade metal or plastic will serve, but for replacing larger portions of the skull (needless to say, the patient's 75 percent is at the high end), something more custom needed to be devised. Oxford Performance Materials specializes in this.

Plankton adjusts to changing ocean temperatures

Mar. 8, 2013 ? Imagine trying to swim through a pool of honey. Because of their small size, this is what swimming in water is like for tiny marine plankton. So, it was often assumed they would be easy prey, especially in the dense viscosity of colder waters, but that is not necessarily so.

Texas Tech Associate Professor and Whitacre Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering Jian Sheng, along with biologists Brad Gemmell and Edward Buskey from the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, have discovered new information that explains how these tiny organisms overcome this disadvantage.

Their paper, titled "A compensatory escape mechanism at low Reynolds number" was published in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The purpose of the study was in trying to determine the effects of climate change at the very base of the food chain," Sheng said.

As one of the most abundant animal groups on the planet, many species, including many commercially important fish species, rely on planktonic copepod nauplii at some point during their life cycle. Understanding the ability of these animals to respond to changes in the environment could have direct implications into understanding the future health of our oceans.

By independently varying temperature and viscosity, Sheng recorded their movements with 3-D high speed holographic techniques developed by the Sheng lab at Texas Tech.

"At 3,000 frames per second, it was like tracking a racecar through a microscope," Sheng said. "We were able to determine that the plankton adapted to changes in viscosity by altering the rhythm of its pulsing appendage."

The response, built-in to its natural muscle fiber, was only triggered by changes in temperature, Sheng said. It could not compensate for changes in viscosity due to environmental pollution, such as algae blooms or oil spills.

A new study from researchers at Prince?ton Uni?ver?sity pro?vides evi?dence for how the brain per?forms this feat. The study, pub?lished in the jour?nal Nature, indi?cates that cer?tain position-tracking neu?rons ? called grid cells ? ramp their activ?ity up and down by work?ing together in a col?lec?tive way to deter?mine loca?tion, rather than each cell act?ing on its own as was pro?posed by a com?pet?ing theory.

Grid cells are neu?rons that become elec?tri?cally active, or "fire," as ani?mals travel in an envi?ron?ment. First dis?cov?ered in the mid-2000s, each cell fires when the body moves to spe?cific loca?tions, for exam?ple in a room. Amaz?ingly, these loca?tions are arranged in a hexag?o?nal pat?tern like spaces on a Chi?nese checker board.

"Together, the grid cells form a rep?re?sen?ta?tion of space," said David Tank, Princeton's Henry L. Hill?man Pro?fes?sor in Mol?e?c?u?lar Biol?ogy and leader of the study. "Our research focused on the mech?a?nisms at work in the neural sys?tem that forms these hexag?o?nal pat?terns," he said. The first author on the paper was grad?u?ate stu?dent Cristina Dom?nisoru, who con?ducted the exper?i?ments together with post?doc?toral researcher Amina Kinkhabwala.

Dom?nisoru mea?sured the elec?tri?cal sig?nals inside indi?vid?ual grid cells in mouse brains while the ani?mals tra?versed a computer-generated vir?tual envi?ron?ment, devel?oped pre?vi?ously in the Tank lab. The ani?mals moved on a mouse-sized tread?mill while watch?ing a video screen in a set-up that is sim?i?lar to video-game vir?tual real?ity sys?tems used by humans.

She found that the cell's elec?tri?cal activ?ity, mea?sured as the dif?fer?ence in volt?age between the inside and out?side of the cell, started low and then ramped up, grow?ing larger as the mouse reached each point on the hexag?o?nal grid and then falling off as the mouse moved away from that point.

This ramp?ing pat?tern cor?re?sponded with a pro?posed mech?a?nism of neural com?pu?ta?tion called an attrac?tor net?work. The brain is made up of vast num?bers of neu?rons con?nected together into net?works, and the attrac?tor net?work is a the?o?ret?i?cal model of how pat?terns of con?nected neu?rons can give rise to brain activ?ity by col?lec?tively work?ing together. The attrac?tor net?work the?ory was first pro?posed 30 years ago by John Hop?field, Princeton's Howard A. Prior Pro?fes?sor in the Life Sci?ences, Emeritus.

The team found that their mea?sure?ments of grid cell activ?ity cor?re?sponded with the attrac?tor net?work model but not a com?pet?ing the?ory, the oscil?la?tory inter?fer?ence model. This com?pet?ing the?ory pro?posed that grid cells use rhyth?mic activ?ity pat?terns, or oscil?la?tions, which can be thought of as many fast clocks tick?ing in syn?chrony, to cal?cu?late where ani?mals are located. Although the Prince?ton researchers detected rhyth?mic activ?ity inside most neu?rons, the activ?ity pat?terns did not appear to par?tic?i?pate in posi?tion calculations.

In his 2008 Mr. Olympia debut, Heath finished third, becoming the first rookie to place in the top three since Flex Wheeler in 1993. A day before the Friday pre-judging for the 2009 Mr. Olympia competition, Phil caught a stomach virus which caused him to come in to the first day 10 pounds lighter than planned. He was a heavy favorite for the 2009 Mr. Olympia title[citation needed], but ended up taking fifth. In 2010, he took second place at the Mr. Olympia contest when Jay Cutler won his final title. In 2011, Heath became Mr. Olympia when he defeated Cutler. In 2012, Heath defended his Mr. Olympia title defeating Kai Greene.

Heath has been featured in many fitness and magazine articles, including being featured on the cover of FLEX magazine. Heath currently resides in Denver, Colorado, and trains at Armbrust Pro Gym in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Phil has released four bodybuilding DVDs: ?The Gift?, ?The Gift Unwrapped?, ?Journey to the Olympia? and Becoming Number 13. The latter three films are by Bodybranded Films and director Johnathan McFarlane.

Galaxy S III bug disables lock screen, grants full access, tests patience (updated)

Lock screens are around for a reason: to keep people from getting where they shouldn't. They aren't always infallible, though, and a few weeks ago, we saw a vulnerability in several builds of iOS 6 that granted access to the phone module without a passcode. Then, a couple of days ago, we reported on a Galaxy Note II bug that allows the quick-fingered to launch anything immediately behind the lock screen. Now, a similar flaw has been found on the Galaxy S III that breaks the lock screen altogether, permitting full use of the phone. To replicate the bug, you'll need to tap the "Emergency Call" button on the lock screen, then go into the ICE (emergency contacts) menu. From there, press the home button, followed quickly by the power button, and that's it. If successful, pressing the power button again will bring up the home screen straight away, and what's more, the lock screen won't return until the handset is restarted. Sounds worryingly simple, right? In our experience, not so much.

We first tried this method on an S III running Android 4.0.4 ICS, and a Note II for good measure, but to no avail. Then, we had a crack at an S III running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and were close to giving up trying to replicate it when voilà, it worked. We hoped to provide you with a video of the bug, but it must be camera shy. Despite literally hundreds of attempts in front of the lens and several more behind it, we've only managed it once -- we found it impossible to nail down the correct timing between the home and power button pushes. Samsung's likely aware of the bug already and when quizzed about the Note II vulnerability, said a fix for lock screen issues on affected "Galaxy devices" was in the works (read: they didn't say the Note II specifically). We've reached out for comment just to be sure, but until a patch is provided, keep your phone concealed from nosey types who read tech sites and have saint-like patience.

Update: Samsung has responded, confirming a fix is indeed on its way:

Since his petira in 1994, there has been a battle for and against naming a Jerusalem street after Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz. Barring any last minute surprises, the battle has finally come to an end and on Sunday, 28 Adar 5773, a street will be named in his memory. A final approval is still pending, but it appears this is more of a formality than a stumbling block. The street has not yet been selected, but it appears it will be one of the streets in the Hebrew University Givat Ram Campus.

The late professor was an outspoken individual, one who was the subject of much controversy and criticism due to his views on many issues, hence the 20-year battle over naming a street in his memory.

The following excerpts from Wikipedia tell a bit of his life and the controversy that surrounded the individual.

Leibowitz was an Orthodox Jew who held controversial views on the subject of Halacha. He wrote that the sole purpose of religious commandments was to obey G-d, and not to receive any kind of reward in this world or the world to come. He maintained that the reasons for religious commandments were beyond man?s understanding, as well as irrelevant, and any attempt to attribute emotional significance to the performance of mitzvot was misguided and akin to idolatry.

The essence of Leibowitz?s religious outlook is that a person?s faith is his commitment to obey G-d, meaning G-d?s commandments, and this has nothing to do with a person?s image of G-d. This must be so because Leibowitz thought that G-d cannot be described, that G-d?s understanding is not man?s understanding, and thus all the questions asked of G-d are out of place. Leibowitz claimed that a person?s decision to believe in G-d (in other words: to obey him) defines or describes that person, not G-d.

One result of this approach is that faith, which is a personal commitment to obey G-d, cannot be challenged by the usual philosophical problem of evil or by historical events that seemingly contradict a divine presence. When someone told Leibowitz that he stopped believing in G-d after the Holocaust, Leibowitz answered, ?Then you never believed in G-d.? If a person stops believing after an awful event, it shows that he only obeyed G-d because he thought he understood G-d?s plan, or because he expected to see a reward. But ?for Leibowitz, religious belief is not an explanation of life, nature or history, or a promise of a future in this world or another, but a demand.?

Leibowitz was a staunch believer in the separation of state and religion. He believed that mixing the two corrupted faith. He condemned the veneration of Jewish shrines, cynically referring to the Western Wall as the Discotel (a play on the words ?discoth?que? and ?Kotel?).

In contrast to his strict views on some religious matters, he was surprisingly liberal in others. On the subject of homosexuality, for example, Leibowitz believed that despite the ban on homosexual relations in Judaism, homosexuals should do their best to remain observant Jews.

Leibowitz served as the editor of the Encyclopedia Hebraica in its early stages. Apart from his innumerable articles and essays, Leibowitz authored a wide range of books on philosophy, human values, Jewish thought, the teachings of Maimonides, and politics. Many of his lectures and discourses, including those given as part of the ?Broadcast University? project run by Israeli Army Radio, were subsequently compiled and printed in book form. Leibowitz was a prolific letter-writer and his advice or comment was sought out widely. A first collection of his letters (in Hebrew) was published posthumously.

Mendes has been praised for his work on "Skyfall," the first Bond film to rake in more than $1 billion in revenue.

But Mendes says he has made the "very difficult decision" to focus on other projects "that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond." They include upcoming London stage productions of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "King Lear."

In comments published Wednesday by movie magazine Empire, Mendes said he was honored to have been part of the Bond family, "and very much hope I have a chance to work with them again."

Mendes worked in theater before turning to film. He won an Academy Award in 2000 for "American Beauty."

"Skyfall," which stars Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem and Judi Dench, won two Oscars last month, including one for Adele's theme song.

Now that it is crystal clear that Republicans are happy to cut needed government spending in an era when the economic recovery remains fragile and when Keynsian prime-the-pump stimulus is still needed, observers across the political spectrum have suggested that President Obama miscalculated in assuming that the GOP would step back from the brink. While that may or may not be the case, the administration still has an opportunity to give the Tea Party a dose of its own medicine, and to prevail in the sequester debate.

To begin, the President could announce that to achieve savings required by the sequester, he will use executive authority to redirect federal spending away from Tea Party districts, in other words districts that are represented in the House by members of the Tea Party or conservative Republicans, and that are located in states with 2 GOP senators. If voters in those districts want to be represented by officials who oppose government spending, the President should, within the limits of the law, oblige.

Sure, courts may step in and block executive efforts to direct spending away from some districts and towards others. But it could nonetheless by symbolically useful for the White House to stand up to fiscal extremists in a more emboldened way. As it does so, progressives could continue to remind the public of how hard conservatives have worked to direct federal spending to their districts at the same time that they strive to deny it to everyone else, such as when Paul Ryan trashed the President's stimulus package despite his having asked for stimulus funds for Wisconsin.

Is it irresponsible to ask the President to do what he can to direct spending away from Tea Party districts? Maybe. But whenever I think of the Tea Party, I remember a 2010 New York Times interview in which the reporter asked a party member to defend her monthly social security check given her opposition to government spending. Her response? "That's a conundrum, isn't it? I don't know what to say. Maybe I don't want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security. I didn't look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I've changed my mind." This is the mindset of those who have hijacked federal policy.

It would also help if the White House asked Republicans to specify exactly how much smaller they want the US government to be compared to governments of other modern societies. Non-military federal spending as a share of the economy is only 17%, roughly half of what other countries spend. (The 17% figure assumes a defense budget of roughly $1 trillion, the sum of the Pentagon's official budget plus other defense-related spending distributed across a range of federal programs).

Seventeen percent is a miniscule amount, and shows that we take worse care of seniors, students, sick people, poor people and infrastructure than other comparable countries. Even when one adds in state and local spending, non-military spending is low. Every time Republicans mention a "spending crisis," we should remind them that our non-military spending is at historic lows (to say nothing of the fact that they were the ones who busted the federal budget with tax breaks for the rich, and who blocked the only path to significant cost savings, single payer health care.)

It would help, as well, to be more forceful in driving home the message that the government spends (wastes) a lot more on tax breaks for the rich than assistance for the poor. The federal government spends about twice as much on the mortgage interest deduction, for example, than low income housing, and provides most of the mortgage interest gift to upper income people who don't need it. Is it really necessary to spend federal dollars (via tax expenditures) subsidizing multi-million dollar second homes?

Finally, progressives should stop saying that sequestration cuts will undermine national security. To the contrary, the nation spends more on defense than all of its enemies combined, and there is no national security justification for our bloated military budget. The Pentagon's excessive budget is more a reflection of the political muscle of the military-industrial complex than a realistic assessment of the nation's security needs, even if one favors an expansive global role for US forces. If there is any silver lining to the sequester, it is in demonstrating that cuts to the military budget have no impact on national security. If anything, the cuts are too small.

To suggest that sexuality or discussion of sexual topics at a technology conference is inappropriate is equivalent to putting one?s head in the sand and ignoring the history of how these two subjects have long been intertwined.

The challenge becomes when a complaint about a conference topic turns into a specific action ? censorship ? based upon seemingly incomplete and/or faulty information, or one organization?s own agenda.

And after reading through the accounts of what happened (linked below), I?m amazed at the sheer lack of communication among a group of people who (at least partially) communicate for a living. Apparently Valeria Aurora never thought to speak directly to Violet Blue about her concerns. Ian Fung apparently never thought to have the two people who?s lives he was impacting sit across a table and simply talk to one another, like two human beings. At one point before the decision was made, they were all in the same room together, and could have simply talked it out like three reasonable adults.

Perhaps it was because the Ada Initiative didn?t appear to be interested in a compromise or an actual give-and-take discussion about the topic, as this email from Valerie appears to make clear:

This is total bullshit even if it somehow ends up giving an anti-rape, pro-consent message. Framing a talk about sex in the vocabulary of computer security does not magically make it on-topic, and it definitely doesn?t stop it from being a giant ?You are not welcome or even safe? sign for women.

In other words, even if Violet Blue?s topic was about harm reduction, the Ada Initiative seemed to believe that it was off-topic and inappropriate for the BSides conference (even though they had nothing to do with organizing the conference).

Now, most organizers would take such an opinion into consideration. But unless they had third-party data or some sort of consensus from attendees, I suspect most organizers wouldn?t simply cancel an invited speaker because of one person?s (or one organization?s) opinion.

Here?s the proposed talk that was censored from the BSides SF conference:

sex +/- drugs: known vulns and exploits

What drugs do to sexual performance, physiological reaction and pleasure is rarely discussed in ? or out of ? clinical or academic settings. Yet most people have sex under the influence of something (or many somethings) at some point in their lives.

In this underground talk, Violet Blue shares what sex-positive doctors, nurses, MFT?s, clinic workers and crisis counselors have learned and compiled about the interactions of drugs and sex from over three decades of unofficial curriculum for use in peer-to-peer (and emergency) counseling. Whether you?re curious about the effects of caffeine or street drugs on sex, or are the kind of person that keeps your fuzzy handcuffs next to a copy of The Pocket Pharmacopeia, this overview will help you engineer your sex life in our chemical soaked world. Or, it?ll at least give you great party conversation fodder.

I can understand why some people may read that description and be scratching their heads, ?What does this have to do with a security conference?? That?s something only the conference organizers can answer. But here are Violet Blue?s thoughts:

I have presented talks about sexuality at tech conferences all over the world, and I make it clear each time that my talks are not technical and that they are about issues that affect the culture to which I am presenting.

Indeed, it?s sort of a meta-discussion aimed at the people who are in the room. These kinds of meta-discussions about culture and people are not uncommon at technology conference. SXSWi is littered with them; other technology conferences are the same.

There?s a Time and Place to Talk About Sex? And This Isn?t It?

From reading the Ada Initiative?s perspective, it appears their argument is simple ? presentations like this can have an unintended chilling effect on women wanting to attend technology conferences such as BSides SF. Women who have experienced sexual trauma or rape can be triggered by such discussions. All of which may be true (at least from their perspective), to an extent.

The challenge, though, is that we don?t really know how much of an issue this really is for women attendees. We have heard anecdotal reports over the years of X, Y and Z, but no systematic research has been conducted. You can?t argue that something is harmful without having actual data to show it is true (well, you can, but it?s a pretty empty argument if you ask me).

Conferences should not be planned around sensitivities to legitimate topics of discussion. We cannot create a trigger-free world or environment for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or others who are sensitive to topics that they find difficult. It?s silly to try and do so. It stigmatizes the very topics that need to be discussed openly and without reserve.

I perk up my ears anytime someone or some organization claims that censorship is the answer to a self-proclaimed problem. Censoring talks like this one drives sexuality ? and inappropriate sexual behavior ? back into the dark. We have to talk openly about sexual issues ? even about sensitive topics like rape or sexual assault ? because it keeps these topics in the light.

Education is the key to understanding and change ? not censorship.
